Teacher Appreciation Gifts – What We Actually Want
I know I’m biased, but….
I’m a big fan of Teacher Appreciation Week. Obviously, because I’m a teacher and I appreciate a whole week dedicated to appreciating myself and my favorite coworkers.
Even deeper than that, though, I love the idea of people being aware that teachers should be appreciated. I’m sure you’ve heard teachers “complain” over and over and over again about how difficult it is to be a teacher. The reason you keep hearing these complaints is because it really is hard.
I have been in education for 10 years now, and I can honestly say that each year is more difficult than the last. I’ll spare you from the complaints involving teacher pay (or lack thereof) and focus on the biggest and most important problem – the students. Between lower performance scores and more behavior issues, students are not the same as they were in previous generations. They need more – educationally, emotionally, and socially.
I could write and entire book about why teaching is hard, but that’s not what this post is about.
This post is about showing a special teacher in your life that you appreciate them – with a thoughtful gift!
What not to get…
Before getting to the great ideas, I’d like to inform you of what you might want to stay away from. Not that a teacher wouldn’t be appreciative of anything you get them – because truly, it’s the thought that counts. However, teachers accumulate a lot of stuff throughout each school year and eventually (I’m just being honest) that stuff gets tossed. Yes, sometimes, even the personalized stuff gets thrown away! Not because we’re heartless…. but we only have so much room in our classrooms and our houses for all the extra stuff!
Stay away from mugs, tumblers, and water bottles. Despite all the really cute ones out there, and the ability to customize them, we likely already have enough and truly don’t need any more. Plus, if the teacher you know is in a relationship, there’s a chance that they’re already in trouble with their significant other because of lack of cabinet space.
I’ll tell you what we want, what we really REALLY want
Okay… Now the fun part! LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT TEACHERS REALLY WANT!!

Gifts under $10
1. Cute Lanyard for ID Badge
Teachers have to wear their badges – it’s a safety thing! So, why not make that daily accessory a cute one! This POPLOPP Silicone Beaded Lanyard comes in 16 different styles… meaning you could buy that special teacher more than one so they can match them with their super cute teacher outfits.
2. Teacher Journal
Remember that show, “Kids Say the Darnedest Things”? This is literally the life of a teacher. Kids say some of the most hilarious (and weirdest) things, and it’s nice to keep track of them. Reading the passages later is sure to bring a smile to the teacher’s face for getting to relive that memory.
3. Heart Shaped Leather Bookmark
Whether it’s to mark books at home, or the current read aloud in the classroom, it officially time for teachers to stop using sticky notes as bookmarks. These adorable bookmarks make it easy for someone to find the page that they left off, while protecting the pages of the book.
4. Teacher Cosmetic Bag
I love these little cosmetic bags – even though I don’t use them for cosmetics! I use these to store my erasable pens, school rewards bucks, and bandaids. This particular brand has 12 different designs!
5. Gel Ink Pens
I’m a sucker for a nice pen.
I actually found these pens when signing my name on a receipt at a restaurant. They wrote so smoothly and were incredibly comfortable to hold, that I had them ordered before I even made it to the parking lot.
Personalized and Unique Gifts
1. Teacher Affirmations Cards
As previously mentioned, being a teacher these days is hard. This handmade stack of 20 affirmations is sure to remind teachers that everything is going to be okay!
2. Embroidered Quarter Zip Sweater
Don’t ask why, but teachers are suckers for something with their name on it. Even better, clothes with their name on it, reminding everyone exactly who they are.
Or maybe it’s not all teachers. It could just be me.
3. Personalized Wooden Booklet
This gift can be from one child or the whole class! Inside the booklet is blank pages for students to write on and explain what they love about their teacher! This is definitely something that a teacher will hold on to, and might even open up on a rough day in the future to be reminded why they do what they do!
4. Teacher Care Package
This care package can be purchased or created yourself! Fill with relaxing candles, lotions, bath bombs and socks to remind teachers to take some time for themselves!
5. Personalized Labels
I can’t tell you how many times I have purchased these for myself. I love labeling my books (in hopes that the students will return them), as well as other personal items.
Other ideas – with DIY options
1. Picture Frames – INCLUDE THE PICTURE
There are so many options with this one. Teachers love pictures. This can ultimately be a gift that keeps on giving if you remember to invite the teacher to your student’s future graduation and the two of them can remake the picture years later.
There are many different frames available online, so you can find the perfect one!
2. Gift Cards
Some people feel that it’s tacky, but I think there’s nothing more thoughtful than you giving me money to a place I enjoy spending money. By this time in the school year, your student knows what their teacher likes, so make sure to ask them if you need an idea for the perfect gift card.
Fun fact – you can purchase gift cards (and E-Gift Cards) at Amazon! Meaning, you don’t even have to go the store you need!
3. Weighted Heat Pad for Neck and Shoulders
And I repeat… teaching is hard these days. Something like this weighted heating pad made specifically for the neck and shoulders is a great way to *attempt* to relieve some tension in a teacher at the end of the day.
4. Motivational Wall Art
I love this statement. It’s powerful and motivating. (It also matches my classroom decor).
Inspire the teacher AND the students that enter their classroom!
5. Custom Engraved Bar Necklace
It’s cute and unique! You can personalize it with the names of the teacher’s personal children (or pets!), their own name, or a special phrase they might say often.
If you don’t want to buy anything, write the teacher a thank you note. I can tell you, words from the heart mean just as much as any gift you could think of.
Whatever you choose, just know that the teacher appreciates being appreciated <3
